Contaminant removal methods

An effective cleaning method must remove as much of the unwanted contaminants as possible.

An effective cleaning method

should also be as consistent

and repeatable as possible.

Though there are many specialized methods for cleaning specific tools and equipment, the most common methods used for general cleaning are:

 Air blow-off

Generally used in clean areas, not certified controlled environments

Effective in removing large particles

Does not prevent redeposition of contaminants

Does not effectively remove small particles

Does not remove residues

 Vacuum

Generally used for gross cleaning

Effective in removing large particles

Effective on small particles only if equipped with brush attachment

Prevents redeposition of contaminants

Does not remove residues

 Tack roller

Generally used for gross cleaning

Somewhat effective in removing large particles

Does not effectively remove small particles

May not prevent redeposition of contaminants

Does not remove residues

 Dry wiping

Does not effectively remove small particles

Can remove some residues

May not prevent redeposition of contaminants

Sometimes used for drying after wet wiping

 Wet wiping/mopping

tension reduces capillary forces

Very effective in removing large particles

Very effective in removing small particles

Effective in removing residues

Does prevent redeposition of contaminants if properly saturated

Conclusion

Wet wiping and mopping is the most effective method for removing particle and residue contaminants, and preventing their redeposition
