Definition of woven fabrics

Nonwovens are flexible, porous products consisting of one or more layers of fibers. The separated fibers may preferably be oriented in one direction or may be deposited in an irregular manner. They are combined into textiles by chemical, thermal or mechanical processes. Non woven fabric is mainly plane structure. After the Second World War, this relatively young branch of the textile industry has expanded greatly because of its high productivity and resulting cost savings.

The history of contemporary non-woven fabrics can be traced back to the early 1930s. At that time, some textile companies began to try to use adhesive materials as a way to use cotton waste. The first commercial production of what is now known as nonwovens began in the United States in 1942, with the aim of producing fabrics directly from fibers. The market of nonwovens has experienced great growth and has greater potential.

Nonwovens can be divided into disposable or durable goods. Disposable or non durable nonwovens include disposable products such as diapers, medical dressings, household rags and disposable protective clothing. Durable goods are used for clothing joints, car roofs, road cushions and carpets.

Raw material

Polyester is the most commonly used fiber in the United States. Olefins and nylon are used for strength, cotton and rayon for absorption. Some acrylic, acetate and vinyl are also used.

Fibers are selected based on their properties and the expected performance for the end use. New high-quality fibers are preferable to recycled or reprocessed fibers. Both staple and filament fibers can be used, and fibers of different lengths and different general groups can be mixed. The choice of fiber depends on the proposed product, the maintenance usually given and the expected or expected durability. As with all fabrics, the cost of the fibers used is important, as it in turn affects the cost of the final product.
